Today is the second episode of my Top 5 Transformative Design Trends to Try This Summer. This week I take a closer look at photography.

If you’re a regular sender to schools (or anybody for that matter), approach this trend with a little caution. Imagery can have its draw-backs (see trend 1) but it can also have some fabulous effects when used sparingly.

Compose: One of the biggest tips for this trend is to take your time to compose your photos. If you are shooting a product, take a few test shots to ensure you have lit your subject just right. You don’t need a degree in photography for this; a simple point and shoot digital camera or smart phone will give you some great results! There are also some really quirky filters you can apply when downloaded on to your computer too (most cameras and phones can apply filters before you take the shot so you can do the job all in one handy place).

Curate: Create a gallery on your computer of your best photographs that tell a story, either about your product, service, company, and even your beloved staff. At Sprint we have a ‘Hot Shots Day’. Every few months we take a day out to shoot continuously around the Sprint Offices. The subject: staff, our work, products, and a whole heap of other fun and interesting stuff that will act as a back catalogue of great shots which we can dig out throughout the year, saving us heaps of time.

Placement: Where you place your pictures is important too! Don’t just add an image to your emails to fill space. Teachers have little time to read reams and reams of copy so use them to explain chunks of content at a glance. Below is a photo I snapped of the Sprint team during an ideas meeting. It’s engaging, shows us as approachable, and makes a great addition to our social cover photos.

Take away quick-tip: Take time out every few months to create a catalogue of photos you can access whenever you need. Don’t forget to upload them to your social sites too for maximum exposure!
